I just took delivery of a new CLS with command. The glove box compartment has a small RS jack does any one know what it is for and can it be used to connect an IPOD to the Aux with appropriate lead?

My other question is the car is prewired for a phone but I need now to get a cradle.. Problem is that my present phone is a Treo 750 and I can see no such cradle by MB. Can any one suggest a supplier. Alternativly I have to go back one step to my old NOKIA N70 but again all the reports I read say that the phone list will not be transfered from the N70. Any advice or help on those two problems will be greatly appreciated

Jack in the glove box can be used to plug your iPOD into and set COMAND to use AUX and you're there. Can't help you with the phone I'm afraid. Congratulations on your purchase.

Brett, thank you very much for the advice. having scanned several IPOD accessories suppliers I cant see a lead, which has IPOD connection on one side and RSjack on the other. Do I take it that the lead is a MB item available only from them? Many thanks again

the phone is a tricky one. You have 2 choices. Either a cradle for which you can get a phone (a fast shrinking list) or else get a bluetooth cradle. There are only 2 sources of cradles. Your dealer or ebay. No one does equivalents. For the bluetooth cradle to work fully you'll need a "SAP2" compatible phone. MB have a list of 'approved' phones but I bleive the Nokia N80 is one. Not sure about others but its the primary reason I'm sticking with my ageing 6230i.

You can get your dealer to install an IPOD interface which will allow you to charge the ipod and access the playlists from the dash display and wheel controls. Not sure what the plug you have fits, but I do believe it is an aux audio input.

The socket is standard 2.5mm stereo, you need a lead with two ends the same as the socket on your ipod for the headphones is the same as the one in the glovebox.
A pity you didn't get the dealer to fit the bluetooth cradle as part of the deal as I understand they work very well ;-)

Which engine do you have in your CLS?

I once rented a CLS 350 from Sixt in Germany, what a great car. Drove 500miles in it, from Frankfurt to Munich and back. Very comfortable and even the 350 (coupled with the 7 speed auto) had enough oomph to make it a fun drive, not too sure about the steering feel though...

That was in March 05, so got some attention too as it was pretty new back then. Mind you, even though the car was nearly new the GPS didn't work and the lights/foglights had a mind of their own. Only after arriving to my destination did I realise I had been driving at 250kmh only with sidelights and fogs (at night!).

I'd think that, in the UK, the 350 is all one needs in terms of engine?

Here it is at rest after travelling at max for an hour or so :D

Malcolm, I had Mercs since 1991. I had some disappointments too. my last one was a 320 CDI E class and every day in the morning it reminded me it was a diesel and ruined the rest of my day. fantastic ride but the noise unforgetable.

The CLS is a CDI too and I can say it is by far the best Mer I had. The straight 6 is so much superior noise wise and performance too. I will let you know more about consumpton. I must say I am very pleased.. :D

Many thanks for the advice. I think I got all I could out of the dealer though it can be said never enough.. I shall try the ipod according to your advice and it may be all I need. Will have to make a decision on the phone though as I am not keen to pay the £300+ for the blue tooth particularly that it does not appear to work with the phone I have. The engine is a 320 CDI a dream my previous was the first diesel also 320 E but nowhere as smooth as this one. :D

Much appreciated. I may have to take back my 6230 from my daughter and give her my Treo. She will be delighted ;) Not sure why MB does not update the list of phones to some more reasonable models. Thank you

You are right on the engine of course ;) I would agree on the restricted rear headroom but the boot space is generous by any standard. We are talking coupe here, what do you want blood :D

Mb do not get any info from the phone companies untill they are available in the shops. They can then get to work on designing a cradle + soughting out the software so that the phone will work in the car. By this time the phone has been updated 2 or 3 times & they are back where they started again. Untill the phone companies release info to MB, prior to public launch, our cars will always be behind I'm afraid.

My w221 S class had 'phone prep and cradle when new and because of only vintage 'phones working with this system I bought the (£352) bluetooth kit which works well but of couse again there is only a small list of approved 'phones although the Nokia 8800 is ok. I was speaking with a local supplier who had because his own personal transport had these restrictions had bought loads of 6230i 'phones. I got as couple of these hopefully they will laqst until things get modernised. I have had family members who own more fashionable 'phones attempting tom connect but not possible.
