New Diesel Engine

I have seen some reports of a new 4 cylinder diesel engine to be fitted to the C class and new E class.

Does anyone know when this is likely to be introduced?

Is it an entirely new design?

I am wondering if it would be worth waiting for it rather than going for a current engine?

Depends whether you are talking C or E. With the current E class, the bargains on new and nearly new are so great that they will swamp the gains from fuel saving of the new engine. I got a 6 month old E220cdi estate, with only 6k miles on it, from an MB dealer, for £16k below list price. That would pay for fuel to the moon and back -twice?
