New E-Class Diesel

Hi folks,

I've just joined your forum today and this is my first post, so please go easy on me!

My Dad is looking into buying a new Mercedes, so I offered to do some research into them on his behalf.

He was initially looking at an E320 CDI, but he thinks they're a bit more than he wants to spend. I think his budget is circa £36k. I went into the local Merc dealer with him at the weekend, but the salesman was new and didn't know the anwers to any of my questions!

I know the latest E320 CDI is a V6 diesel (October 05-on), what was the previous engine, a straight 6?? Also, we noticed there is now an E280 CDI, which seems to have the same 3ltr engine, only with less bhp at 194, as opposed to 224bhp in the E320 CDI. Is the E280CDI also a V6?

From what I can gather, an E280 CDI Sport looks like it will come in around his budget, but he has also considered looking at a dealership demo of the E320 CDI, where he could possibly save a couple of £K.

Any advice from you more qualified Mercedes fans would be great!

I say if he wants power get a C320CDI, or size get a E280CDI.

My advise (for what it's worth) is go for the 320 as I did 2 months ago having been impressed with the 220 and the 280......the 320 is different class again and sooooooooooooooo economical............... If he is pushing his budget go for a 6month old 6k on the clock option and save himself loads

Thanks guys, what sort of mpg are you getting from your E320?

He currently drives a 530d Sport auto, and only gets about 29/30 mpg - which he's none to impressed with. His previous 530d was a manual and he got 40/41 mpg.

Ideally, he would like high 30's.

my C320CDI averages 32 overall but my right foot weighs more than average

My advice, forget the dealer and buy from an online broker. There are some stonking deals on E classes at the moment. I used drivethedeal.com on my recent A class purchase and got 20.5% discount on a brand new car, supplied by a mercedes UK main dealer. You can save well over £5K on a brand new E320CDI from this site at the moment.

My E320 CDi estate gives 194 bhp and is an inline 6. Beautiful engine, very quick, and gives 32-34 mpg ave depending on use. I havn't really looked at the spec for the current models but if the 280CDi is giving the equivalent bhp output and torque figures to mine it will be a good performer. If this is the case the 280 looks like good value.
