Just another problem, occured when taking my w 124 out for a spin with new engine mounts on, an unusal vibration whas felt before a bang and loud metalic sounding rattle from under the car. At first i thought the exuast pipe had fallen down but i found that part of the driveshaft had appeared to be disconnected, it's where there is a rubber ring at the loint. I managed quite easily to push it back in place and get to destination. Just wondering if any peeps with knowlage of these old 300d 's could advise me on this. It sounded very serious at first but when i pushed shaft back in place the noise was gone on last part of journey, which i crawled home just the same:(.

What does not bear thinking about is if the front of the propshaft was to fall to the floor whilst motoring at any sort of speed.

There should be a metal strap to prevent that BUT if it is at all rusted the prop will just go through it whilst whipping at high revs .

Would it rip the rear of the car in half if that happened !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

URGENT URGENT URGENT fix me thinks. DO NOT DRIVE CAR.

Got mechanic on to it now, there was some type of strap or bar preventing it from falling to ground, all clear of rust underside. I presume this was the noise i could here under acceleration before changing mounts, i have attatched the comparision of old mounts to new, and some pictures of dismantled driveshaft, Thanks for advice to all.

I think it's fair to say that doughnut is past its best...

One thing I would say to high-mileage W124 owners is that failure to replace worn parts like engine mounts & doughnuts does seem to lead to knock-on wear to other wearing parts like diff bushes and diff input seals

If you take your car to someone who knows W124s they may give you a long list of things to replace but, if you're in the car for the long term, it's worth prioritising the jobs and working through the list as funds allow. You'll end up with a better car
