Finally sorted transfer of plates to my CE (bought with old cherished plate)..

I purchased plates from these guys earlier today http://www.myshowplates.com
before the documents turned up via courier from the previous registered keeper (this afternoon)..

I note from the docs that I am meant to show a certificate to obtain new plates (which expires next thursday).

Having tried to call myshowplates without joy I see from their FAQ that they provide plates only for 'show' and not for road going cars...:-?

Is this just them avoiding a statutory loophole - the plates I bought are standard in every respect.. they should turn up tomorrow..

Having never done this sort of thing before - can anyone comment?

cheers

It's a loophole - I wouldn't worry about it. Legally you're supposed to show documents for plates to be made up - they're also supposed to be in a set font, spacing and with a postcode / BS mark from the company that made them. Seeing as the DVLA actually promote buying rubbish plates to make up words then it's a bit rich to expect people not to bend the rules.

It's a V948 which is a Number Plate Authorisation Certificate.

As you already have the plates arriving, then it should make no difference to you. The only time I've had to use one is when swapping cars privately (i.e. no dealer involvement to do it for me)

I've also found, that for every number plate maker who asks for the certificate (and photo identity) there are at least three who don't bother.

Just get them and blt them on. That's it :)

thanks for the replies

a bit of googling seems to throw this issue up on loads of forums...

I guess I'll just put them on (if they turn up) and post the old tax disc back..

Actually you can buy the bits and make them up yourself if you want.
(I have noticed a few of the old hand roller gizmos in the used car dealerships now that the approved jobs are all computerised).
George.
