Sussex Police:
Roads Policing Unit pilot new car to reduce carbon footprint!
267b.png

As part of a pilot to reduce its carbon footprint, our Roads Policing Unit has introduced the first plug-in hybrid vehicle to its fleet.
The new Mercedes E350e is the first of its kind to be used within the Force and will be used by the team to determine the viability of electric cars being used as routine patrol vehicles.
Although the Force already has a number of hybrid vehicles, this is the first of its kind for the RPU, who often participate in high speed pursuits and consequently require vehicles with a higher specification.
Inspector John Lakeman of the Roads Policing Unit, commented: “As a Force we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint where we can. The Roads Policing Unit can sometimes have to drive over 200 miles in a single shift, so it is important we try to counteract this impact on the environment.
“The new addition to the fleet was an ex-demonstrator vehicle and so was purchased at a much reduced price and the new vehicle will be used by the team as a routine patrol car to keep the roads of Surrey and Sussex safe.”

Well it would be a much reduced price if it was almost 3 years old when they bought it.
According to DVLA records they acquired it in August.

They do say that they purchased it but many of these are confiscated proceeds of crime

All you have to do is stay in front of them for maybe 21 miles and hope they forgot to refuel:D

We had a E320CDI estate on demo in about 1999, it had good reports. MB insisted on doing the servicing which was not acceptable the the Transport Unit. It was the same with BMW in the early days, but they relented.

It’s going to keep breaking down

That's so true! Another gizmo to go wrong (and it will).

Great choice when the crooks all drive Audi S/RS, BMW M and AMG models running full tanks of fuel on false plates etc.

Who gives a flying 'f' about a carbon footprint when you need to be chasing and shooting criminals. FFSK, next there will be ****** meetings to asses the carbon footprint prior to responding to an emergency.

Its all the big things and the majorities that impact carbon footprints the most, not a couple of police cars.

Will the gizmos - dash cam, computers, police comms etc shorten the range? Would also help if they put lightweight crews in, not the usual overweight exercise starved plods.

It’s all the kit that they have to carry that turns them into the Michelin man.

Purely a publicity exercise, concocted by their media relations department.
I agree...along with the misplaced political correctness(or words to that effect) of the officer wearing a mask in the picture.
Having said that it does mean he can't be easily identified. :D

The cuts in the Police have no doubt impacted the lack of proper police patrol cars on the roads.

Personally, I'd say have more of them in unmarked cars like the BMW 335d to catch the idiots on phones, driving UI and generally driving like reprobates but, still able to give chase to serious performance cars being driven by the high band criminals. I'd seen people do the most outrageous sh!t right in front of marked BMW 5 series police cars and the coppers just let it go

If I was to make a police car, it would be;

1 x BMW 335d x-drive with custom R&D'd police spec engines with more robust internals, cooling and better turbos.
2 x machine guns in the front grill and rear bumpers
1 x machine gun on the bonnet
2 x machine guns on the roof.

If criminals do not want to stop, then they must have done something really bad and by, failing to stop, they give the police the right to open fire on them

Trust me, the above would be amazingly effective and yet cost effective too.....lets see how criminals fancy their chances against that and zero tolerance to bullsh!t policing.

And where does the electricity come from for this car? Fairy dust? What about the batteries? Produced by angels are they? I do hate this virtue eco cr&p. I have a hybrid but that is because it was quite fast and still gets a decent MPG........

And where does the electricity come from for this car?

Maybe they could install hamster wheels linked to generators in the cells and get the villans to generate electricity to charge the car...

I guess they also need to ensure criminals are only chased at the start of the shift as half way through they will run out of power.......
