The 4 new tyres I'd had fitted last August where replaced today I'd worn them out (15K miles) Pzeros asymmetric. I've gone for Rosso's this time £770 worth - we'll have to see what we get out this set. I was quite pleased with the even wear I had in the last set.

I assume if you've clocked up 15k in 6 months, most of that would be motorway cruising - all I can say is ouch. I got 16k out of my budget tyres and 75% of that was rush hour city stuff so lots of tearing across roundabouts and chasing amber lights - ok not a 55 but still buckets of torque to shred the rears and with most of the wear at the edges, if I'd increased the pressures I reckon I'd have seen a good few thousand more. If I'd stayed on the motorway I'd have been looking for 25k+ at least.
They may be grippy but they're hardly good value at 5p per mile.

I think in your position I'd have had a look at Michelins. Reasonable grip and allegedly they last well.

Type of driving was mixed - motorway & A roads. The front ones I could have had a little longer 2K maybe. The rear where illegal by quite a way oops! it is the grip problem that's tearing the rubber off the back rather than the distance covered. My buisness partner has just fitted Michelins on his Boxster they seem ok but he's along way behind the torque that the 55 has.

I managed over 30k miles from a set of Goodyear Eagle GSD 3's on my GT-Four and that has over 300bhp and was always driven "spritedly" When the Conti's that are on now wear out I'll be going for the Goodyears again as so far of all the tyres I've had over the years (Pirelli, Michelin, Falken, Continental, budget etc) they've been the best.

Cheers,
Mark

Glad I only drive a C200K - and in "C" mode. And I like to think I am a fairly "mechanically considerate" driver as well.
That no doubt accounts for the fact that I expect to get at least 30K from my set of Continentals. Nearly £800 every 15K seems a high price to pay for "spirited" driving.
Some may call me boring. I can live with that.

Intrested in Daves comments regarding the tyre wear rate, mileage wise, and the changing of manufactorer, is this soley for wear reasons, cost implications, or are you hoping for better ride/quieter road noise influence, or other. I thought most 55s came with continentals, intrested to why you have swopped over to other makes? Incidentally, my 55 is just on 15K, fronts are still very good, possible another 4-5K at least, but rears are still very legal, but low, prehaps another 2K, then need replacement, should I swop manufactorer?, and for what reason.

I've got Pirelli P-Zero Rosso's on mine as standard, I believe they are relatively soft compound rubber tyres and therefore won't last as long as Michelin's or Conti's but give very good grip when pushing the car. I'm surprised to hear about the Goodyear's Eagle's though as they are also supposed to be soft compound rubber sports tyres.

MB recommend Conti's & Dunlops for the E55 AMG Kompressor, I swapped from the Conti's last August to the Pzero Asymmetrics because of grip, the Pzero's are a softer compound thus giving more grip. For me hard compound hard wearing tyres on this kind of car don't go, there's to much loss of traction. you do need a soft rubber with this kind of torque & power, unfortunately you do compromise mileage. Price wise there about the same I got mine through the company that supplys our company van tyres, so my tyres became lost in the paperwork if you now what I mean;).

Appreciate your comments Dave, I will give them a thought when I need to replace mine, I will also be looking at my own paper work at the same time!
Ps. I will repost the golfing day as soon as it gets warmer, (hopefully your still intrested), and hope there may be a bit more intrest, to make it a more viable and intresting day
