Hi All,

I'm looking at getting a C220CDi Coupe but will also consider the C200CDi. What are the pros and cons comparing the two?

I'm presently driving a Honda Civic Type R, but after something better and cheaper to run.

I have a '54' reg C200 CDI coupe and had a similar dilemma when choosing. Mine's a company car and I had the option of going for the C220 without the panoramic roof, or the C200 with. In the end I wanted the options and went for the C200

Coming from a Type-R Civic I would imagine that you would find the C200 pretty slow. My previous car was a Golf 1.8T which is nowhere near as fast as the Civic and whilst the C200 is adequate, you will find it a bit underpowered when overtaking if you're in a hurry. Mind you, it has calmed me down as a driver though and I find it quite relaxed and comfy If you are a spirited driver, I wouldn't go with the C200.

In terms of fuel economy, there is virtually no difference between the C200 and C220. I get on average 450 miles to a tank of diesel with a mixture of town and motorway driving. I have read on these forums that the older non EU4 engines have better fuel consumption though.

As far as I know, the only difference between the two engines is the program in the ECU though I would be interested if anyone knows if there are other differences ...

Thanks for the reply cxtwo. I used to have a Golf 1.8T before the CTR, which was remapped.

My main worry was that I would find the C200 a little slow, and as you guessed I am a little spirited. I guess I'll have to test each and comapre the 200 and 220.

I'm only getting 28 mpg in the Civic, around 250 to the tank, so the Merc diesel is looking pretty good. Is there much difference between the auto and manual?

I had a loan 200cdi a while back and found it painfully underpowered. It cruised ok but took an age to get there. I certainly couldn't play with the big boys. Yet, I recently drove an E220 cdi and found that ok. The figures don't show it but that should mean the C220cdi is even better.

If you like driving enthusiastically, I suspect you'd regret the 200. I have a rule that I won't buy anything that can't get to 60 in 10 seconds. The 220 scrapes in at 10.3 but the 200 is another 1.5 seconds (15%) behind. Doesn't sound much but it's an age when there is a truck bearing down on you!

To be honest, given the mpg difference I can't see the point of the 200.
Get a 220.

There are 2 I've found on the net. I'm guessing I won't get as much as I'd like for my CTR.

The 2 are a Coupe with leather and a Saloon with leather and COMAND. The saloon is £1k cheaper too. What's Tavertine Beige like as a colour?

Hi Chris,

I went for the auto, as I personally don't like manual boxes on 6-speed diesels - I find that you have to change from 1st to 2nd very quickly as the engine only revs up to 4-5k. I've heard that the new Merc manuals are pretty good compared to the old ones, but you still have the foot operated parking brake which some people find difficult to get used to.

I would guess that the C220 performs pretty well, and would go for that if budget allows. I did have a tuning box on my C200 which is supposed to bump the car up to C220 power levels, and I would say that overtaking (60-90) acceleration was better than with the Golf (though mine was the standard 150hp).

If space is a priority, then the saloon is a good option, as the Coupe's boot is small !

Is COMAND worth having? I'm not too sure about the gold coloured car, but will try and get a nosey at it anyway.

How does a C270 or even an E270CDi compare in economy? They're not that much more to insure.

I went to test drive the coupe today, and I'm very impressed with it. Extremely quiet, but anything is going from the CTR. The torque shove was quite good, but it didn't quite perform as I thought.

Just need to go over the figures now and decide if I want it. What sort of mpg will the 220 return?

I'm going through the same process myself but basically my annual mileage (12000) doesn't really warrant a diesel and given I like a bit of poke it leaves me one option now, the C350 unless I go used when a C230K or C320 might do. The 230K will give a good bit of go and will still return about 30 mpg which isn't bad at all - a real pity MB discontinued it.

MY 220 CDI is a great motorway muncher. Round town it's a little heavy on the roundabouts (plenty of those where I live). Average MPG is 40 ish, with short runs (three miles to work) showing mid 30s and distance at speed lim. showing late 40s. The argument about D or P often comes up on a number of forums I visit. Call me tight, but I still like the Heavy oil as it's still a cheap alternative. (Even with our Gov taxing hell out of everything). As for used or new - I saved about 7K on my C class by buying a used 9K mile 14month old one. Let the 1st owner take the bigest knock I say. If however you are going to keep the car for a long time, then you may feel justified in buying new and knowing the full history. Depends on you personaly. I do not mind other people driving my cars and I cannot see how much harm someone could have done to a car in such a short time. I bought my vauxhall Astra 2.0DTI when 8 months old with 16K on the clock. It now has 53K miles and is five years old. does'nt miss a beat.

If it's outright power your after a diesel is not the car for you and if someone else is paying for the fuel........
I know what car I'd be looking at.

Drove the 240 mile round trip from my home in Pontllanfraith to Woven, near Staffs and back today. Computer shows 48.2 MPG. It did hit the 50 on the M5 but dropped over the rest of the journey home. Speeds between 70 and 80 on motorway, Computer showed an average of 55mph.
(I'm not an anorak - just took note remembering this thread. LOL)
