Hello all,

looking for a little help. I have just bought a E220 with history and only 110,000 miles on it. however, now I have it home I am discovering a few issues :(

Firstly, when you put it in neutral and rev it it is fine to about 4000rpm then the car starts shaking a lot (well engine does) it won't rev beyond this. Not sure if it is missing or unbalanced or what? At lower revs engine is fine and ticks over reasonably smoothly (little bit of blowing from the exhaust is all).

Secondly, it is a bit gutless when you put your foot to the floor and it certainly does not kick down. When you slow down it really clunks back into 1st and some times into top (4th). The auto box is no way near as smooth as my volvo 940.

When you take it on a run and stop there is a strong smell of what can only be described as burning.

Have I got a lemon? At 110000 with full history I hope not. My volvo has done many more miles than this and still drives like a dream.

Cheers for any advice.

Are these problems terminal?

Hi & Welcome,

There is a rev limiter in park/neutral so it won't rev over 4,000

Thanks for that Blobcat (that was a quick reply :) )- thats a relief as it runs lovely and smooth below the 4k limit.

Just the gearbox worry now - I assume they do have a kick down feature? And shouldn't clunk with a thud back into 1st or 4th?

Auto Box

Shamefully Stumpy no I haven't - I haven't quite found where to do that yet  I haven't even found the engine oil dipstick yet

Star it has the e/s button on it but it makes no difference what so ever what position this button is in.

Was an E300TD, now a Lexus LS400
DaveJ the gearbox dipstick tube is usually near teh firewall at the back of the engine. It normally has a plastic cap on, you break it off with a screwdriver.

Take it to the dealer/indie and get the gearbox dipped. It might be low, or if its vacuum controlled a pipe may have popped off, or it may need adjusting.

The burning smell could just be escaping exhaust gasses, or oil leaking.

to check oil it depends if it is the W210 model or the previous W124 model which always have a dipstick installed.

which model designation is it (see VIN) ?

It is a W124 according to the vin (or WDB124 actually on the vin so I assume you just forget the DB bit). So I assume then KT it has a dipstick somewhere? I will investigate.

Cheers

Check the oil level, as its a 124 it will have a dip stick, chect the throtle cables and gearbox cables for correct adjustment, check the kick down switch is not stuck in, check the vacume cell on side of gearbox is not faulty and allowing oil to be sucked into engine.

Thanks for that Star. Looks like I am going to have to get myself a manual to find all these things and to try to ensure I make any cable adjustments correctly. I will have a trawl on the web first and see if there are any helpful web pages.

Much appreciated.

just take up the slack in the throtle cable so it just starts to move the linkage then back it off a turn, the gear box cable shud be adjusted till the pointers meet or if an older type so the ball fits onto the socket without slack or streatchin.
