hi

thanks for having a great forum with alot of info on it

i am looking at getting a 190e 2.0 auto. i have found a 1988 model with only 88,000 on the clock (will have to check if its genuine) for £995. it looks in good shape, no dinks etc, and has a fsh.

i have read all the info on these cars and have decided on the 2.0 auto as it has very low insurance and seems to be alot more common than the bigger engine models.

my main questions are about the AMG body kits and lowering.

where can i get AMG kits from? do many used ones turn up often?
WHat springs do people use when lowering? i have looked at so many my head hurts. i don't want to lower it too much if i got it, it already has 17inch alloys on it which is a bonus.

hope some one is able to help as i am looking forward to becoming a 190 owner and hopefuly i can make it my own by adding these mods.

many thanks in advance
Steve

mercedes sportline springs offer the least amount of lowering and
don't cause any negative camber problems, which can cause your
rear tyres to wear on the inside edge.

other popular spring makes are H&R and Eibach but you may experience
negative camber problems and may need to buy a camber kit to
avoid your rear tyres wearing out.

also mercedes use a pad system on their coil springs so you can adjust
the height slightly by using thinner or thicker pads

cheers thanks guys. the above 190 that i went to see had some rust round the sunroof and where the aerial is.

i'm seeing one tomorrow that already has an amg kit on it, only thing is that its done 110000 miles but doesn't have a full service history. he has owned it for the last 5 years and got it serviced whenever it had MOT and thinks he has a few bits of paper somewhere. what should i look out for on this kind of car? oh and its a D reg 2.0 E

another thing is that it had a new gearbox fitted (its a manual unfortunately) not to long ago. should this car be avoided?

many thanks again

i would not touch anything that hasn't any service history as mercs hide their mileage very well and can be easily clocked.

the new gearbox sounds a bit suspect to me...as merc gear boxs are
pretty tough, has this this car been driven very hard or is 110k the real mileage?

i would look at a few more cars before chosing the one as there are lots of dogs out there, so take your time and find a nice one that is well looked after.

have a look on ebay as there are lots for sale but i would not bid for one
unless you had a good look at the car first

cheers willy. i had a look at it last night and it was a real dog. there was rust and bumps all over and the interior was horrible.

i thought it was a bit sus that the gearbox had gone as it lead me to think what was he doing with it to make it blow up?!

its really hard to find the good ones on ebay and auto trader that aren't so far away. there seems to be hardly any good ones in the guildford area.

ah well the search goes on. :D

Just be patient, which is a pain once you've decided you want something but "buy in haste repent/repay the loans at leisure"...your best bet is the ex-company car of a retired gent.

Mike.

can anyone else recommend where to look for a 190? ebay and autotrader seem to be throwing up some real duds at the moment
