Hi ppl,

ok i'm new and proud virgin of the Benz forum, so pls be gentle.
I recently got my hands on a 1988 190e, an absolute beauty. However as with any new ride i'm having some niggles. The cars only done 26000 mls with full mbsh.

It has a problem starting, so i took it into a local garage and he recommend the relay be changed and said 1 or 2 of the injectors were leaking. Also the ABS light was coming on infrequently.
The items were replaced and for about two wks everything was ok, but now the probs returned.
The starting is difficult and even though the ABS sensors have been cleaned, the light sometimes comes on.

I'm sure this is an electrical fault. Is there anything I should get checked, before replacing bits that may not need to be.

Also, I've noticed the auto gear change to be some what irratic. It seems to stick between 2/3 for no apparent reason. I've also noticed that when it's donig this (@ around 30000 revs) and I slowly ease of the gas then it shifts into the next gear.... real strange

Any help would be much appreciated

thanks

d

hehe, 30000 revs

I don't know how the old gearboxes operate, but mine sticks in lower gears until the engine is up to temperature, you can predict the gear change exactly, as soon as the needle hits 80 degrees the tranny shifts to 5th.  It could be that, but I dunno how sophisticated they were on your model.

d, welcome to the world of the star!

As for the gear change on a 190, they are very different from most other autos, which you have already experienced.

Firstly you will notice that they pull away in second, i may be wrong, but i think its the change between 3rd and 4th you are talking about. It only seems like 2nd and 3rd because of the amount of times its changed...anyway, mine is exactly the same..anything over moderate acceleration between 3rd & 4th and it seems to stick in 3rd for an excessivly long time.....this is normal, and nothing to worry about. As long as the changes are smooth, and nothing is slipping you are ok.

You will also notice that the kickdown is very sluggish to operate, and not as responsive as other auto's you will have driven, this again, as another trait of the 190.

I cant really comment on the ABS as i havent got it on mine.

cheers

sticky gears

If you auto box seems to be sticking between gears (holding for no reason) and its really noticible i suggest you get a full gear box service...IT DOES WONDERS and should be done every 20, 000 KM or so.... Got mine done not so long ago and i was suprised at the difference! So smooth, and even more responsive to change...

Good luck

Josh
