Newbie! What's the difference?

Hi everybody.
At 46 years old I've finally bought my first Mercedes, a 1996 E230 Estate.
The question I keep getting asked by her who chooses the colour is.... What is the difference between the Elegance and the Avant Garde?
I thought it was all about trim levels, but before we bought our Elegance (with sunroof and electric mirrors) we looked at an Avant Garde (without!!)
Can anybody help me please? Thanks! :?:

Avant Garde is the sporty version
Elegance is luxury
clasic is standard
Avante Garde have different alloys, 16" for that year I think. The front
grill had more chrome lines on it, 4 instead of 3. The supension has also
got a harder setting. I'm not that sure, but I think its ride was 1" lower.
Different options for cloth seats were also available.

From the bosses perspective,
Avangarde - black dashboard, white clocks
Elegance - walnut, grey clocks
