Hi this has got the better of me
I've lost the front fog lights & also the auxiliary
12volt front socket & also one the near side rear
fog, the bulbs are ok (removed head lights & rear
cluster) the relays are ok (swapped with horn etc)
fuses are ok, removed radio and surround stripped
the switch down (thought it could have gone same
way as window switches) not so as I have operated
the switch contact by hand rear fog will light as it
should (off side only though) front will not light up

The only thing that has happened is I plugged a phone
charger in to the Aux front and the contacts came apart
this could have caused a short,

The fuse box lid says "front fog/aux" fuse are together

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Kev

Surely this is only a blown fuse

I think the problem is only with the front lights as there is only a single fig light on the offside

Just checked the fuses are ok

Ho I forgot I only have 0.22 volts at the plug
to the front fog bulb (near side) didn't check
    the off side.

I have a development with the front fog lights
if I operate the relay by hand the front fog lights
will will work so this is leading me to think it is a
problem with the switch which has two functions
front only our front & rear together I have stripped
the switch and I can operate the rear & hear the rear
relay clicking, the switch mechanism is symilar for both
front & back a tip switch one way operates front & back
the other front only there is a link possibly a diode
blue item see pic to both sides of the switch this is
as far as I can get.

    Malcolm what do you think
some how the switch has to operate both sides of the
switch with one tip our do you think the problem lies
    else where.
I also can't get a live feed to the Aux 12v plug
    Fuses are all ok

It does sound like a problem with the switch.

But it is ONLY effecting the front...the one rear fog light is as it should be...on all modern cars. Yes, the bulb is in the nearside rear (for ease of manufacturing), but it isn't used.

I would just like to add, the relays fitted in the under bonnet fuse box on the 163 can give all sorts of trouble - swap the fog light relay round with another working one of the same type for testing purposes.

I thought the single one at the back was working?

The single rear (no UK MB cars have double rear fogs as standard) is the ONLY fog lamp requirement for the MOT test, so good news I guess?

    Thank's didn't know that.
My mate has had a look at the switch he says its ok, as it only sends a pulse when you press the switch as it returns to the resting position after you take your finger of it, prob to a control unit, would anyone know if there is a control unit & where it might be.

    Thanks once again

I can only suspect that a blown fuse is causing the problem, have you checked the fuses under the bonnet AND the fuses located in the kick panel (drivers side, by your right foot)

Just to confirm, ml's have only one rear fog light (offside)

On cars as of 289560 up to 300420 the cigar lighter was wired reversed with the wrong harness
