Neil after looking at fuses, and you still have the problem, check the wiring harnes near the hinge in the boot area.It as been known that the trunking can cut through the cables.

The handles came off easily, look in the end of the door inline with the handle, there is a little hole to insert a torx drive where you undo the screw and the handle is off, I can send the info.

Yes please Malcolm, its the rear door lock that I'm hoping to change, could you also tell me the best way to remove the rear Sam unit because the aperture is only big enough to inspect the fuses. Many thanks Neil

You have to remove the side lining panel, take care not to break the fixing lug by rotating it to get it through the hole, then remove the plugs.

Please PM me your Email address re handle.

Well that's the rear sam unit removed, I must congratulate Mercedes for getting all those electrical units and wiring to fit under the rear seat squab ! with the sam unit being at the bottom. anyway I must move on from that and just hope that a replacement unit will sort the issues.

Hi Dreamer No 2, I did check the loom after your suggestion The loom is of the retractable type being that it has a powered boot lid, I couldn't see anything obvious and it was then that other functions weren't working, for example the power windows, sunroof, electrics on front seats and maybe a few other things I hadn't checked.

Unfortunately after changing the rear Sam unit things have not changed, I still have no rear lights /powered boot operation/ sunroof operation/ interior lights/ any window operation/ front seat operation . at least I've ruled out the rear Sam and I also changed the relays because the unit had these attached. I can possibly get a friend to come by with his diagnostic machine which he says will do anything that the star will, or can I check anything else out myself.

We went through all the diagrams, and each bulb has its own feed, so sorry the SAM did not fix and STAR is needed now.

Thanks Malcolm, not a problem and It was definitely worth a try because there was a good chance it would of sorted the problem, what would your feeling be towards the fault as there cant be that many units in the control circuit or am I totally wrong !

My thought flashed to the switch, but the fronts are working. What make all this harder is if no bulb or load detected, then the SAM turns the voltage supply off. This is where STAR will help.

That's a blow, I contacted my friend who offered to come by mine with his laptop and diagnostic kit only to find out that he's away on holiday until next week, I suppose it's no big deal as the cars not my daily but never the less I'm anxious to get things sorted and usable again.

Was just thinking about the problem with my car and was wandering if removing the battery without hooking up a secondary supply could of affected anything ?

whilst anything is possible, id say its unlikely as the S class isnt known for such issues. early 203s did give issues, but thats the only one as far as im aware

This is not a fault I have ever seen from disconnecting batteries.

I've just used a icarsoft fault reader on my car tonight and its telling me that there's a fault with the ocp not communicating with the ecu, I have read that they can give trouble so could this be my problem, I know its not star but it does seem very good, ive also noticed that I have no automatic front headlights but are working when switched on manually. any thoughts chaps?
