I've just bought an old diesel-engined Merc, its the first diesel and the first Merc I've owned. I can't believe the noise it makes, its a cross between big-end knock and valve shatter. Should I be worried? Does anyone else have this problem?
Oil. I glimpsed this subject and agree so much with the use of synthetic oils no matter how old the engine. I have found that the older the engine the more often you need to change the oil. I believe that if you changed oil every 5000 miles and used a synthetic oil then the engine would probably last for ever! The one I use is Mobil 1 but Esso do a good one although you don't see it around so much. These oils can be used for both petrol and diesel engines.
The Esso synthetic oil is called Esso Ultron and if you need further information about synthetic oil have a word with their technical department Tel: 01235 545262
The differences between one synthetic oil and another are the additives.
On this subject I thought that this age of Merc diesel is renowned for two things:
i Will continue working for ever
ii Is as refined as a rutting Rhinoceros with toothache!
Anyway I'd just like to add my theory on synthetic oil. The older the engine the wider the tolerances and the more likely that you will lose oil through gaskets etc etc etc. I know that on my Herald I use semi synthetic and whilst it preserves the engine beautifully (and keeps very good pressure) it will lose more through various places than good old 20/50.
Finally, at last I hear you cry, have a look on the container for the ratings and keep an eye out for the Sx rating. I think I'm right in saying that SA is the worst and SJ is the highest protection rating. Don't necessarily discount cheap oils as some of them have a very high rating.
Simon, your reply was amusing and informative. I take my old oil to the waste disposal place at our local tip. I worry that it ends up as a cheap engine oil
