1998 300 td 125000 milles full service history, sounds rattley at idle and then growls untill you get to around 1500 rpm. I added a couple of cans of "fourty" and it it seemed a bit better but not as quite as it was when I got it. that cleaner smelt like an oily white spirit, I wonder if this is a bit of a con? any thoughts

Check the belt tensioner shock at the front of the engine, also don't put any additives in the oil, consider doing an oil change - the engine clatter will get noticeably louder the older the oil is.

300d noisy

mine is same, off road at mo, but wondering if leaking injector as anything to do with it. I aint had much time with it for a while but after oil change it seemed a little better, i also renewed the tensionor as a believe these fail too, but that didn't help. probs needs chain guides or even chain renewing although chains are supposed to last much longer.

diesel treatment not oil

It is diesel fuel system treatment not the oil. the oil has been changed more than the recomended amount. the head was off a month ago ( one of the dammed heater plugs was broken in it, the noise was there before and was still there after the head was replaced,) and the tentioner was ok. the noise got a bit better with the fuel cleaner in it, but still not as quiet as it was when I got it. I would say that it was more of a clatter untill you get over 1200 rpm. the performence is not affected it is just the noise. does anybody know of a cheaper fuel treatment as they just smell of white spirit with a bit of oil as a lube,

Take the car to an injector specialist, and have them cleaned and tested. That alone will do far more than any fuel cleaners ever could.
