so after alot of messing around I finally found out what the noise was, it was the first baffle on the inlet manifold this had all fallen apart and where the pivot point was under the manifold this had fallen out letting the air escape thus giving the poor performance and the blowing noise

anyway we stripped the car and and removed the manifold and replaced it but in doing this the whole of the right hand side of the engine had to be removed

fuel rail, fuel filter power assisted oil bottle so on and so on long job but managed it

when we rebuilt the car it went back together well but when we came to turning the key the car would turn over but wouldnt fire

has anybody got any thoughts

When i renewed the fuel filter on my 270CDI it initially took a lot of cranking over before the engine fired up.........You just need to purge the air out of the injection system by continuous cranking.

ps....any chance of a pic of the failed manifold?

I'm with panason1c here. You do start to give up hope when waiting for the fuel system to self-bleed. Other than going back over what you have disturbed and double checking that every pipe and connector are firmly in place I would give it a bit more cranking. Next time I change the fuel filter I am going to try pre-filling with diesel to see if this helps at all as I dont like to give the starting system so much abuse.

picture if the manifold is now impossible they went in the skip on saturday and the guy has now taken it away but all I can say is that the secondary hole on the unit has a baffle in it and it a 25mm diameter and when they fail the drop straight into the valve arrangement lucky we stripped it down cause if it had gone to merc they would of told me to strip the head as well which would of been up and above the original £1000.00 for fix the manifold
