I have decide after much delibaration, to keep my oil dribbling, smoke screen producing, 123 280CE. Coupled with the wonderful 2spd A/T (3spd on a good day with a prevailing wind).
I have also decided, after a lot less delibaration, not to keep the engine/transmission.
I am going to replace the whole lot with a more managable 'domestic' set up. "APOSTATE APOSTATE" I hear you cry !! (having first looked it up on Google). Well you can call me what you wish, but the facts are having just been quoted $5-10,000 by www.mbspares.com.au
to recondition the engine properly, thats without the gearbox, I have no option other than try this ludicrous transplant.

Things in my favour :-

I am a fully qualified Mercedes Benz Technician with 20yrs experience.

I have a fully equiped home workshop c/w two poster hoist.

Access to all specialised tools.

I can manufacture new mountings with ease.

Money is no object.

Things against me:-

All of the above is a lie.

So does anybody have any idea of the best alternative set up. Can you help ?
I am quite willing to document/photo/video the whole horrendous ordeal.

given the nightmare produced by decision 2, I'd reconsider decision 1.
It would be a major a job for someone who could tick all those boxes. I'd suggest you'd be better selling it as a repairable classic rather than scrapping the engine gearbox now and the rest in a years time when you've given up.

Hello everyone. I was going to do my 1st post today...but I can't compete with this one!!

Just the thought of having a hoist ............ I'm hurting; even though it is an untruth.

You wont like doing major surgery on it, but wont like parting with it either; so why not put it on a pedestal in the garden?

OK So has anybody EVER heard of anyone putting in a different motor, myths, old wives tales etc..etc.. anything would be of help.
Dont forget, you peeps can watch every step of the way, it could be like Coronation Street, I could post pics, videos 3/4 times a week, we could laugh and cry together, a bit of humour thrown in for good measure.

Its going to happen, but I need a start.............please help. :D

I used to do that type of thing once and it is good fun, something to do and think about, also a harmless hobby.

I do not know what you are going to use, but there are some great old cars out there, just one of the old ones that comes to mind is the Alfetta 1.8 engine that had so much torque it could pull a 20 ft caravan faster than a 4.2 XJ6

Good luck and keep us informed
