Hi

I want to change the ATF in my car but I want to do a couple of flushes (i.e. change oil and run for a while then change again to try and get rid of as much old oil as possible.
I was wondering if you can use one of those vacuum oil pumps to suck out the ATF? Anyone tried it and if so how much oil did it get out?

Cheers

Its probably not worth it, as the extraction pump won't remove all the oil.

You need to drain the auto box sump, as well as the torque converter (which the extractor won't reach) and then drop the sump and remove the rest. If you do this the only oil left is a small amount that will lie in the pipes running to and from the radiator (<500mls).

The info I have is that you only need to worry about flushing these pipes and rad if the oil is dark, but does not smell burnt and fine aluminium powder is visible in the ATF, say if you swirled a small amount in a teacup.

If the ATF is dark and does smell burnt, just change the oil and filter.

If you were really worried about it, I'd drive it for a few thousand miles and then change the oil and filter again.... but I don't know if theres much value in this.

There is an ATF "conditioner" available in many motor factors that is supposed to help sticky gear changesetc etc.

Thanks Fran - I suspected it wouldn't be that easy. I do need to change the oil as it is dark. I am just going to have to get underneath and get my hands dirty.
