Hi all..
I recently was given our trusty family 1991 Mercedes 200TE. It's done 188,000 miles and is generally fairly solid though you could probably spend quite a lot of money on replacing stuff that is past its best.
It runs pretty well and is nice and quiet except for really quite loud tappets which will come and go - so sometimes you can be sitting in traffic, the tappets will get noisy for a 1 minute or so, then suddenly it'll shut up and be quiet.
The car has been in the hands of his local friendly backstreet garage for years and I'd be surprised if they (or he) have been using decent oil - so I figured I should tackle an oil and filter change on it using some decent oil and the correct grade for the engine and see if that improves things. So which oil / grade should I be looking out for? Apologies if it's been asked a thousand times but I couldn't see any threads specifically for that engine.. and being a bit of a Merc newbie, I don't know what else it's been used in!
As a side question, assuming the oil change does nothing to improve the noisy tappets, any idea how much labour is involved at a specialist to get them changed?
