Oil Type 229.3 or 229.5

Do I need 29.3 or 229.5 oil spec for my 2003 C Class C200?

Could check the handbook or the last service invoice or check in the engine compartment - there are 2 stickers that state 229.31 on my car because low ash oil is a requirement.

Thanks - at the last service they put 291.5 in - I rang them and they said we always put 291.5 in all cars i.e. shell helix ultra. However the handbook says 291.3. Hence my confusion.

291.5 is better = more expensive

I know - thats why I want to know if I can just use 291.3 - I assume that if thats what the handbook says then it will be fine. It is the fact that it had 291.5 last time that has made me check it out.

I am sure someone will have the answer.

If it's in the handbook then it will be "adequate", perfectly servicable.

You must have a particulate filter if you require low ash oil.

Not sure that i would rely on the last service invoice. My 2001 C180 was serviced at Mercedes who filled with semi synthetic oil, handbook states fully synthetic.
