My 1998 E240 V6 is using approx half a litre of oil every 1000 miles or so. It has covered only 44500 miles from new. There are no visible leaks as far as I can tell. Is this a common problem with the E Class and are there any solutions?

Oil Usage

if you look at your owner's manual, you will see that the car will use a small amount of oil depending on how you drive your car or underwhat conditions-if you drive it in the top rev range for each gear,it will use more oil and als if driving in hilly terrain or towing a caravan ,it may use more,If you read the technical data section of your owner's manual you will find the exact figure of oil consumption for your model-hope this helps

Oil Usage

Hi all,

The V6'S had a oil consumption problem when they first came out. The remedy was to remove the engine oil & filter & replace with running in oil. This then allowed the piston rings to bed in properly on the bores. After 1500 miles. Replace the oil with 15/40 mineral oil. This thicker oil usually sorted the problem.

If I were you I would get some running in oil & run the engine for 1500 miles. Then fill with mineral oil. And check the consumption then.

Hope I have been some help.

Regards
