Oil - what's changed?

A friend of mine has just picked up her 2008 c220cdi from the dealer with the first service having been done. Just glancing at the service stamped page I noticed they'd used Mobil 1 0W-40. My immediate reaction was that they'd used the incorrect oil and should have used a 229.31 or 229.51 (eg Mobil 1 ESP) because of the particulate filter (going on the specification in my handbook for my 2005 c220cdi). I looked through her handbook and the specification is now 229.3, 229.31, 229.5 or 229.51 for this engine!

What's changed? Do these engines no longer have the particulate filter fitted?
Is it not considered an issue with regard to blocking up the filter?

Particulate filter is not standard fitment on C class in UK.

Thanks Russ.

I'd previously assumed it was legislation driven which is why I couldn't understand it being dropped.
Presumably the particulate filter restricts the gas flow and reduces economy and/or performance?
Is it coded into the car? In other words if it ever needs replacing do I have to? (or even cut it out if does reduce performance/economy)?

Thanks
Steve

Just as a point of interest you can use any oil that conforms to 229.3 or 229.5, these things are moving forward all of the time, back in2002 it was 229.1

Spoke with MB re particulate filter on my C220 cdi and they said it was fitted and I need to use a low ash oil. Mobil 1 ESP does the job (30% off at Halfords if you reserve on the internet and pick up from the store). Couldn't find any other details to suggest DPF was fitted so it might be coded into the VIN no data base at MB. I did find a price of £600 + vat for a new DPF so you wouldn't want to clog it up with a high ash oil.

I believe if you have a particulate filter, there will be a sticker in the engine bay stating 229.31 or 229.51 oil must be used.

Thanks Lulu - tried that Russian site and I do have option 926 so I will make the same assumption.
Thanks Russ but no obvious sign of the sticker - I'll look closer next time but this couldn't be more confusing - not what I expected from Germany!
Thanks

"Lift up the engine cover & next to the oil filler is a label with the spec."

That advice was from another thread on the same subject.
