You can never go far wrong with whatever is referenced in your cars handbook.
Then again, it depends on many factors.
1. How long you intend to go between oil changes.
2. How much money you are willing to spend
3. The prevailing conditions of use

Taking these points into consideration.
Some people change their cars oil every 3-4000 miles. I even read somewhere a few years back of this guy that changed his cars oil every 1000 miles. That is just plan silly if you ask me. In which case a reasonable grade non-synthetic would be fine. Unless its a diesel of course.
Go for a 10-12k mileage between changes and a fully synthetic is advisable.
Be warned though. Some "fully synthetics" arent. A good indication of quality is cost. Mobil one always gets a thumbs up. Or any other similar quality brand.
In the UK conditions are pretty average. The weather never gets too cold or hot and driving speeds are kept in check.
Check out this link for loads of useful information...

As far as your question on suspension, you will have to wait for another to answer that.
