I don't know if anyone is interested but you can buy a vacuum oilchanger ( similar principle to the US Topsider ) from- www.justoffbase-tools.co.uk. It's a bit pricy at £55+vat+del (£71) but if you don't like scrorming about or you can't, then maybe it's worth it.

I believe MB remove your oil through the dipstick hole when they do a change- I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I reckon I'm going with Mobil 1 btw, I guess if it's good enough for MB, that'll do.

I know most of us here wouldn't trust our cars with KwikFit, but on their website, they are offering Mobil 1 oil and filter change for £39.99.

Does that sound cheap?

Can we trust them? We all know the stories, went in to get my brakes looked at, ended up with 4 new tyres, new exhaust....

What do you think?

Regards,

David

I thought as much.

Their new moto should be:

Nothing can get your blood boiling quicker, than a dim-wit Kwik-fit fitter!!!

Have a good weekend.

Is this right enough,(or a wind up),saying MB change the oil through the dipstick hole,is that gear or engine?
And if thats the case I take it theres no drain bolt??,is this something else your not supposed to do yourself?,I'm just about to change my gear oil,and I will either use chammios,or a peice of stocking.
But it does sound a bit "far fetched",on a car like that having to drain it through the filler hole.
I know you mention MB using Mob 1,when I asked them, they said they used Magnatec, or for some reason are they using Mob 1 for the gearbox & Mag for the engine, whats right??

Regards

The dealers do suck the oil out for convenience, but there is a drain plug.
The dealers use various brands of oil and they are all average quality as this gives the best profit margin.  Only AMG cars get synthetic.
You can drain all engine and driveline components.

I have seen one of the vacuum devices in operation last weekend and it was certainly convenient.  The drain plug was removed to check for leftover oil and it was all gone.  The engine was flushed with flushing oil and this helped as the vacuum device did struggle with the actual engine oil.

Also the capacity is not enoough for my car.

Will (Dieselman) summed it all up better than I could. The Mobil 1 recommended oil info came from the States and also from the sponsorship of the McClaren/Mercedes F1 Team- surely they would not accept sponsorship unless they endorsed the product? (or would they?). The oil changing is, again as Dieselman says, an option; if you can keep the oil sludge-free then it seems a reasonable idea. I'm sure the purists would not agree, but for the less agile amongst us it is an alternative.
As an aside, I've bought Miller's XFD for the TD; the £18 difference will go towards the vac pump!

Hi guys, I wish I had seen this topic earlier. I have not visited the mentioned website but years ago I had a SAAB that had been seviced by a non SAAB agent and the sump plug copper washer had not been  changed with the result that there developed a leak and I being ignorant of  that, I tightened the plug and cracked the plug housing. To cut a log story short the sump was sealed and the only way of changing the oil was  through the oil filler tube. I used an electric  fuel pump from a mini attached to a rigid copper tube to pump the oil from sump.

I got the catalogue through for these peeps at the weekend. They seem pretty good actually. However there are no prices in there, you have to look on the website for that.

I agree with the comments on Kwik fit generally but I decided to take advantage of the low cost Mobil 1 oil change. My 300D takes 7 litres of the stuff so the £40 charge is very low.
I took a geniune MB oil filter to them and watched them doing the work at every stage.
I used the Kwik fit place on Abbey Road Leicester where the manager is an MB owner and he did the work.
Never had a good thing to say about Kwik fit before but this guy was excellent.
Re the Mobil 1 car runs much smoother, about 5% improved economy and hasn't used a drop in 7.000 miles.

I once got an exhaust from a major UK-based chain. I had to return to them 7 times when it repeatedly worked loose. The last time it picked up a piece of metal from their floor and wrecked the side wall of a tyre. (They refused blame for this, but their floor was covered in similar bits of metal!)
I won't mention the name of the crowd concerned, but I wouldn't trust those boys with a brick, never mind my MB.
