what kind of fuel economy should we expect. So far we're hitting mid 30s on busy crowded motorways at or near the legal limit, with lots of slow down- speed up, and high 20s low 30s in town with lots of traffic lights.

Planning a long trip over the seasonal break, lots of hopefully steady high speed cruising with a full load of kids and stuff. What should we be expecting?

The engine sounds fine and steady and as sweet as a nut and pulls like a train, but I'm no diesel head yet. Trans fluid and filter were the first job we did. It's a 70k machine.

Thanks JB

I'll let you know what we get on a decent run. Nice cars aren't they.

Myros,
Re mpg, what your seeing is about right, mixed usage is about 32-35mpg.

I find that the mpg works out at:
70mph = 40-42mpg at 2200rpm
80mph = 38 at 2500rpm
90mph = 36 at 2800rpm

I have seen 46mpg with a light foot (mid summer) on A roads with BP fuel.

Hope you are enjoying the engine, its a gem, Clarkson was spot on with his comment 'every engine you will ever want'. One of the best deisel engines MB have produced and would probably still have been producing had it not been for EU regs and not being able to drop it into the C Class.

I never thought I'd be a deisel convert but I've crossed the bridge, V8 performance from an oil burner with economy to match.

Typically I get 37 - 38 mpg on my commute which is 10 miles A road - 40mph + couple of round abouts (mormal display 33mpg by the time I hit the motorway), then I have 10 miles on the M6 from Junction 4 to Junction 3 - typically 30 - 70mph heavy traffic - by the end of the motorway stretch I am doing well to see 38mpg then 6 miles coventry ring road - dual carriageway loads of round abouts + traffic lights 10 - 50mph, by the time I arrive at work, on a good run I get 37mpg, school holidays 39mpg and bad run 32mpg.

My wife also runs a shop, so I am always making the 17 mile round trip to collect and delivery stuff I only see 30mpg on this type of journey. Overall I am getting 35.5mpg (measured fill up to fill up). It is a bit lower at the moment, however, I have a duff injector

About 4 times per year I travel 200 miles to Weymouth to visit parents - Once I set cruise at 70mph and managed 43.3 mpg (again measuring the tank not the computer)

I think that Malcolm's figures are spot on.

2 weeks ago I towed a box trailer with 1/2 tonne of racking inside - over 100 miles I saw 29mpg @ 60mpg on motorway, I thought that was pretty good

My car is a 1999 E320CDI estate (with rust) with 120k miles

Malcolm

the missus bought it a month ago to replace her company car. They were happy to stump up for a smaller estate, but having had the 124 7 seater, we felt that we should have a more modern and economical version of it, so she bought it and will take a mileage rate for business use.
I get the same rate when I use my cars for work, and I can just make it break even on the SL, so the 210 should be quite economical.
Its in really good condition, just a hint of rust on the rear door tops, but it has FSH and mobilo and will be off to the dealers soon to fix it.
The kids love it, I like it and I think the missus is quite keen as well.
I must try that 70 mph cruising, it sounds like cost effective fun!
