While going home on the A12 outside of Colchester on Saturday 15/7 afternoon, there was a car standing on the hard shoulder with black smoke coming out. Driving by, being waved to move by the driver (plus lady). While passing the vehcile (and calling 112), I noticed it was the old shape A-Class, flames and smoke pouring out through the side windows (looked like from the engine).

Late in the day, passing same spot again, car was gone.

I am thinking that this could have been an electrical fault or perhaps oil spillage on a hot engine.

Any idea's??

Didn't any other one in the car though. So happy to have seen to paople safe.

If it was a diesel then one of the injectors may have failed spraying high pressure fuel around. This happened to a ML270 on the M4, driver only just had time to get out before the whole car went up.
