1990 Mercedes Benz 230E. (W124 chassis). 4-speed automatic transmission. Overhauled transmission five years ago. Valve body needed professional cleaning twice since the overhaul when none of the gears would engage. Results of the first cleaning lasted for about two years. Second cleaning only lasted six months—attempted DIY cleaning of the valve body with petrol.
My questions:
1). Could a faulty torque converter cause the gears not to engage?
2). Could a loss of vacuum cause the symptoms described? My understanding is that vacuum only regulates smooth switching between gears.
Thank you for any advice given.
