Hey guys, hope you're all keeping safe!

I did the oil cooler seals on my 2008/9 e320, everything's fine, no oil leak anymore, but the coolant is leaking like a waterfall, its ridiculous.

It's leaking from the little rubber grommet between the engine and transmission (so I thought I'd not seated the oil cooler properly or something.

Then I managed to get a photo of the oil cooler (directly above, to the left of the turbo) and there's coolant *on top* of the oil cooler! Pics attached.

So I'm stumped! Is it the cooler or something else in that area?? Thanks in advance!

@Steve@Avantgarde you know a bit about the engines I've read! 7E08B1A9-6859-4B0B-A4AA-547C7C05AC6A.jpeg DC736187-A00A-4C0F-B16F-74F8B4C4157D.jpeg

That rubber plug , with the red arrow has got the torque converter inside it , that’s where I accessed the TC drain plug when I changed the atf . Can’t help beyond that though

I could see the TC spinning when the car was on. I assume the drain hole from the valley of the V block in this v6 goes pours into there and out. Just hoping it's not the cooler again!

So everything’s not fine, there’s a little connecting pipe between the manifolds, you might have caught a seal on it, if it is, inlet manifolds off again.

Yeah that's possible! I bought that piece new and replaced it whilst doing the job. Is there a technique with that pipe or just hope for the best?

Turbo out again then?

It’s never hope for the best here, if it is that, start again minus the oil cooler.

You were right, I can see blue liquid here when the car is running

Also will I have to replace all the gaskets again? (I just replaced them all when doing the oil cooler job) I.e. Turbo, manifolds etc

Also this seems only half the reason, I can see a steady drip there, but at the bottom it's twice as much! Like a stream if I rev the engine a few times

Not that I can see, I kept the egr and that side manifold together last time, I didn't take them apart

+1 on the cooler bridge. Did you replace the cooler as well? Has to be spotless when the new one goes on.

I always replace the little bridge pipe at the front, its fiddly to get back on as well.

Thanks for chipping in! Would you recommend replacing the oil cooler completely? Not just the seals? And if so, is a genuine merc one the only way or will an aftermarket one do?

As Ian has suggested. You have pinched a seal some where. I would say the inlet manifold bridge or the oil cooler seal itself.
Thanks Steve! Would you recommend replacing the whole oil cooler or are the seals normally enough?

And will I have to replace all the turbo/manifold gaskets that I just replaced?

I mean, they vary in the condition when removed, and I certainly don't want to do the job more than once, so I tend to recommend changing it whilst your there. They do corrode and can be sometimes difficult to clean/seal again.

For the cost of the cooler, which is £140, I always replace it. I dont see the point in stripping one down and rebuilding it all with a part which has also been known to fail.

Yeah fair point, thank you. Any particular method to cleaning the mating surface on the block, I just used brake parts cleaner. Some fine sandpaper as well?

Thanks again! Any tips on cleaning the surfaces?

I wouldnt use sandpaper on anything alloy that you want to guarantee a leak tight seal from. A bit of 1500 wet and dry maybe.
