Hi. I changed my oil a few days ago (05w/40) and all was going well when I noticed a strange noise on start up yesterday. It almost sounds like a vibrating plastic engine cover, but it's quite loud. Only lasts a second or so, is this the dreaded cam chain wear issue, the car has 150,000 miles on it. Thanks!

Hi
Could you provide a video or sound clip it will give more of an idea of what’s going on.

Did you only hear it after you had changed the oil? Did it do it again the next time you started it?

Have you changed oil before or was this first time? Same oil than before?

First time, bit naughty, the oils not been changed for three years. Only did 13k on it though, it didn't seem especially dirty, my 530d went 35,000 without an oil change, that oil was rough between the fingers.

Was it 5w40 that was in there before?
Did you use a genuine filter?

The service history is odd. The first 5 services lists 5w/40, it then had a few at a Mercedes specialist and they used 0w/30, then the last 5 services were at the Main dealer, 5w/30, I know, weird!!

It's also had lot's of work done by said main dealer in between, oil cooler seals, wiper motor etc. Over £4k in receipts.

Sometimes you can hear the valve lifters the first time after start up, as the oil has been completely drained.

I only ask about the filter because some have an anti drain back in them, which means the top of the engine can stay lubricated on start up.

Oil cooler mean lots of labor nothing weird there... and such changes in oil grade should not mean drastic changes... what oil brand you used?

It happens each time, could it be the starter?

Is this better?

Focus and camera orientation still bit off, but looks like ok. If you don't see lubrication hole in shaft above that threaded part, its ok.
