My 3 year old E320CDI which I've owned for 4 weeks, has started miss behaving. It will only rev to 3000rpm under all circumstances. It's as though it's on the "winter" setting but its not I've checked it a number of times. It also changes up at lower RPMs as well. If I floor, it stationary in Neutral, it will only rev to 3000 and sits there. Any ideas please

No auto MB engine will rev over 3000rpm when in N, in case you knock it into gear.

Sounds like you are in 'limp' mode, get the codes read or disconnect the battery to clear fault codes and try again.

  I have one of these since new, now has 81K.

I am not sure of the particular problem you have but if you bought from an MB dealer I would strongly recommend you get a full independent examination of the car before your warranty expires. When you get that stand over the dealer and insist everything is done satisfactorily. The small cost will be well worth it. W210 320 cdi have a litany of problems, most of them actually not serious if only the dealers were honest. If you have the service history and the service book look closely at the service requirements, the books are quite good in explaining what should be done.

This is a list of what we have had and my comments.

Rear shock failure..check for fluid leaks, expensive. Get the car on a lift and look closely or take off rear wheels and look at every seal and joint. These failed under warranty at 24k, bodge job done by MB dealer, eventaully replaced post warranty.
ABS/ESP check for fluid leak, possible ABS failure. ABS pump replaced at 65K, failed again five months later at 74k. Pan European warranty dishonoured. Mobilo warranty not applicable to repairs according to MB.
Brake fluid replacement every two three years...
Drop links, knock at front. easily replaced, not expensive, failed under warranty at 20k, warranty dishonoured..
Oil level sensor faulty from new, warranty dishonoured.
Air conditioning, check well, condenser radiator failure common, costly. If it does not cool quickly to cold you may havea problem.
Glow plugs do eventually go, mine went at 70k. Ok, routine but expensive. Make sure glow warning light goes out and stays out.
I dont have the inegrated phone but they are trouble too. Last day I was in dealers there were three calls while I was waiting, each of them about malfunctioning phone systems.
Blowing bulbs is another common problem, ie bulbs only lasting two days at a time.

We have had ferocious trouble and had to spend a lot of money sorting out bodge jobs done by official main dealers here. While they are great cars to drive I would not recommend them to anyone these days because of unreliability. Mine is away at the moment, third time in 6 weeks and fourth time in four months. The dealers are not much good because they get no technical bulletins from MB. My last problem was eventually solved by myself, dealer looked and did what I suggested and hey presto problem found.

Hi and thanks for the replys

I think it may be a faults W S Switch that is getting stuck in Winter. If i push the switch around a bit in it's panel while "S" selected, the engine will rev as it should, but then after a few miles it goes back to this 3000RPM limit. If anyone has a 320CDI, if it is switched to W, does the transmission change up earlier, does it only rev to 3000, and does it seem to have less torque?

Thanks

When the switch is in W the transmission starts off in second and changes up earlier.

I am not sure about the 3000rpm limit on that as I have not tried that.
