Has anyone done a comparison between Shell Optimax & BP Ultimate?
I've been running mine exclusively on Optimax, until yesterday when I put a tank full of Ultimate in my E280 estate. I think that the engine has more torque (therefore less throttle at given speeds) & is slightly smoother.
I would appreciate others comments.

I've only used Optimax in the Merc so far but haven't had it that long. Have tried both in my Triumph Vitesse which pinks like mad if I use cheap stuff and have found it likes Shell the best, but there isn't a vast difference. That's why I've put Shell in the Merc so far but I wouldn't worry about using BP if that's all that was available. From my own experience I think that the more modern the car the less difference I can feel between fuels and that a lot of the improvements people talk about in 'moderns' are psychological. It's only when you get a situation like the Vitesse that the real difference is evident - cars that were designed to run on 5 star suffer badly with low octanes but later cars cope better. Just my experience.

I think what my learned friend (uncle Slinky) is saying is that the subject of super unleaded fuels has ben done to death, try a search on super unleaded and I think you will see for yourself. That said whilst we seem to disagree on whether superunleaded is wonderful or a waste of money most supporters seem to think that Optimax is the on ly contender.

I personally think that cheeseyget is spot on, older cars designed for 5 star are helped, modern cars - a waste of money.

Just off to Tesco for a tank full of their finest :)

whilst proceeding in a northerly direction thru the tech section i happened upon this thread. I decided to offer assistance in the hope that it may help the posters obvious distress.

as a matter of fact i use sainsburys as it cheapest and after extensive testing in the slinkymobile none of the others have had any different effects.

therefore the directions to the above thread, as supported by the Nephew, seems to hold all the evidence you should need with which to make the correct judgement.

i shall no toddle off to bed

Just to add confusion to the vast and already confusing info.

I filled up with 4*(lead replacement) the other week and my car did 240mls from one tank(aprox 46L) and i wasnt hanging around either. And yes, the car seemed quicker and ran smoother. Super unleaded only gets me around 200mls and sometimes "pinks". But as most of you can only run on unleaded you can ignore my post. LOL

I know of a garage that sells proper 4*leaded, out in the sticks and im going to fill up with that and see how well the mpg and power works out.
