Hi I have a e300 td est auto 1998 and have had a new belt water pump idler and gearbox oil change all genuine merc. Yet while towing my caravan the temp goes from normal 80 or under to 80-100 on guage then a big long hill and she rises even more and starts to smell. If I put on the heaters this helps .when over the hill heaters off and she is ok again still higher than when not towing. any clues please. my merc indie could not fault the car when i had the oumo etc done. ps the pump etc was done for peace of mind it had no leaks or faults. milage is now 126,000.
cheers ash.:)

There car uses a visco coupled fan,,has that been tested to see if it cuts in at the 82 c mark, the thermostat opens at 80 c on this engine

Bad viscous fan coupling and/or blocked radiator?

The temperature will rise when towing but it sounds like your car is getting too hot. I've had an E300 Diesel W124 (same engine as yours but no turbo) up to about 100 degrees when towing up a long hill but I haven't had to resort to the heater. So I suspect you do have a fault

I'd get the engine hot then check the surface of the rad for cold spots by hand or with a laser / infra-red thermometer

It says this on the Bosal site for their tow bar.
Not for 300TD with air conditioning and/or stationary heating
