pagoda no transmission

280 sl 1969.
Transmission not going into drive, in all ratios engine must be reved up to 3000 to engage ratio and this happens with a huge lurch and wheel spin.
Same in reverse.
Car has done 97k miles from new, transmission filter gasket and fluid was changed at 70k miles.
Fluid not burnt and showing approx 20mm too high at idle or when car stationary.
Problem started after a run of 70 miles car lurching in gear etc, also idle speed contantly varying from 300 to 1000 and car stalling, idle speed now adjusted with linkages realigned and idle is constant but still terrible problem with transmission, car undriveable.

Any suggestions?

Hello and welcome.

For a near instant fault it sounds like pump problems rather than torque converter problem. Nothing was ever put onto WIS for the 113 cars

I would ask one of the firms listed here if they can help. they are good people and do not cheat, they do nothing but auto boxes

Thanks for the excellent suggestion, the location of the garages are good as well, as I was not aware of them at all. I will drop the pan change the fluid and hopefully will be able to get to one of them.
