PARKING BRAKE FAILURE

My Parking Break pedal clunked the other day when I pressed the pedal to apply the break, then I noticed the pedal pressed down to a much lower position, very close to the floor of the car.

I have done some research, and the spring and location of all the elements under the driver's dash side look to be correct.
I am just about to open up the area under the back seats where the two cables and elements might be to see if the common issue of the spring eroding being the culprit, but if anyone has any experience of this, I would THOROUGHLY APPRECIATE what insight you can bestow.

Up under the footwell, you’ll need to be a bit of a contortionist…

Have a look under the rear seats, there will be an access panel to where the cable splits in two. Id wager one of the cables has slipped out here so your only applying a cable at one side.
