Can anyone explain how 'Parktronic' works - as opposed to normal parking sensors?

Also, how does the system 'know' you want to park - and not simply just wanting to move forward?

Sorry for the dumb questions

I know that they work up to about 5-10 mph and the rear only in reverse, so thats how they know your parking.

Not sure on the exact science behind how the work, but they are no different to any other parking sensor.

Merc,s call loads of there systems "tronic" eg, tiptronic, disctronic, parktronic, etc.

Parktronic is just a MB name for it.

It becomes active at speeds under 5 MPH in D or R. it is so active that if someone walks behind or in front of the car when stopped and waiting it starts to bleep,, when I have the top down and some one walks behind the glare at me as the bleeper goes off

It's very like an echo sounder on a boat. A signal is sent out and a little Elf with a stopwatch times how long the signal takes to hit the car in front and come back again. It then uses a calculator to work out how far in front the other car must have been for the signal to have taken that long. All part of the Elf service.

I think my Elf has been outsourced to Mumbai. He gets there but you have wait for him sometimes, so go into a space too quickly and he'll still be saying 'a bit more' as you hear the crunch! He's also a less confident parker than me as he's shouting stop when I know I've another foot to pay with. Good general guide though and once I got used to his foibles, I wouldn't be without him.

Sounds pretty unElfy to me. Mine work AOK. Perhaps yours needs to see a doctor.

nah I think its ok - no worse or better than the old mans or the landrover come to that. It works great at 2-5mph but I'm asking a bit much for it to respond any faster. The gap is just the normal safety margin. Once it shreaks I can creep it forward a few more inches.

Another question

Thanks for all the explanations.

Another question, sorry. Does Parktronic just make a sound - or is there a pretty display to accompany the sound.?

You can turn the sound off or on, when its off, its easier to hear what you have reversed into

I like listening out for the shreaks as I reverse outside schools...

Pretty leds and a increasingly manic bleeping (if you turn the radio down enough to hear it).

The Mrs's car cleverly turns down the radio if it want's you to hear the parking sensors.

Don't tell anyone - but the Volvo had HUGE rubber bumpers which I used to 'feel' my way out of tight parking spaces - saved me a FORTUNE in minor repairs :D

With the ML - colour-coded 'bumpers', privacy glass, rain and night time, meant the fitting of parking sensors..!!!!!!!

There are both front and rear visual indicator bars with LEDS to give a visual indication of parking accuracy as well as the audible indication. The front indicator is just in front of the dashboard air conditioning grille and the rear indicator is sunk into the roof lining just above the rear passengers heads.
