Metallic is basically ground up aluminium flakes, it gives the sparkle in the paint, there are about six different grades of metallic flakes from extra fine thru to coarse.. Pearlescents, derived from the pearl.. gives a colour extra brilliance, basically adds depth to a colour..could best be described as a patch of spilt oil on a wet surface..ever seen the colours that emanate...Pearls come in a variety of colours .white red, blue, green etc. and are normally added to their respective colours, but on occasion are mixed with different colours, ie. a red pearl may be added to a blue colour, or a black to give it extra luminosity...a good way of checking is to look at your paint under bright sunlight and u can pick up the red or blue tone in say a black paint..to be quite honest though there is usually only a small amount of pearl in any paint, and a panel painted with a pearl added, and a panel painted without pearl added doesnt look that much different under normal daylight conditions. For instance today I painted the side of a 911 carrera the colour is LC9Z which is basaltschwarz perl ...basalt black pearl and it can be formulated with pearl added or the no 2 shade is just straight black metallic no pearl added ... this colour is also VW black magic pearl .... and malcolm there was me thinking ur answer bordered on the technical
