Hi All,
I am just taking delivery of a used S280 with the old style mobile phone wiring. You can only use a Nokia 6210 or 6310 with it. I have been told that it would cost thousands to change this to accomodate a newer phone.
There must be an easier way of getting what I want without going through such expense.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Unless I am very much mistaken, you go to your Merc dealer and he snaps in a new cradle to suit many modern phones. My 2005 S32ocdi has the cradle for the Nokia 6230i. There are many phones catered for but not all. Ask your dealer for the latest list of all available cradles. Forget a cost of thousands. I changed mine for £130 at a main Mercedes dealer.

The other option is Bluetooth. My local Merc dealer keeps the name of a recommended firm who will do radios, phones etc. They use the firm if someone wants a car that is in stock but which does not have pre-wiring for a phone. Carphone Warehouse will also fit a bluetooth system but check the effect on any guarantees you may have.

I can recommend the Motorola IHF1000 bluetooth car kit.

Single button press and totally voice operated. With my V6 I can say any name in my phonebook and it dials :D

avrmobiles.co.uk for fitting... excellent

I can be converted but you're right to think that it isn't worth the cost. The best thing you can do is to get an after market parrott or Nokia bluetooth kit installed and forget the prewire.

Sorry, I am new to this type of messaging and am not sure how to ask further questions on the replies received so far.
The point that Hawk20 made is not workable as my commnad system pre dates the ones that you can change the cradle. However it may be worth speaking to Hawk20's local dealer or radio and phone specialist that is mentioned in his response. I would appreciate the contact details of either so that I can phone them
Thanks for all the reponses

Assuming it's not a proper MB kit conversion you're looking for, any reputable local car radio installer will do this for you.
If you call your own local dealer they will tell you who they use. e.g. In Leeds, most dealers use a place called "unicar" (I've used them myself a number of times).
Most towns have such a place these days.

I'd use them in preference to the carphone warehouse fitters as they're a lot more flexible and normally have a better range of options, both for the kit and any visible fittings, plus you can discusss what goes where. CPW tend to work of a strict menu.

Rather obvious question really and I am surprised nobody has put this forward earlier..........Why not go on ebay and buy yourself a good working nokia 6210/6310? Then either swap sims or have a redial to a new sim. You can then keep the phone in the car all the time.:?:

Thank you all for your response, my conclsuion is that I have three basic ways of going.
1) the simplest as suggested is buy a Nokia 6310 with a PAYG card and have all calls diverted from my current mobile to it. The downside is that I will not have the caller id on incoming calls.
2) Change sim cards from my current mobile to the in car one. The hassel is to remember to put in and remove.
3) Try & get a duplicate sim, if possible,- best solution if I can find how to get a duplicate sim.

Thanks all of you for your help and any additional advice would be appreacited.

I had the same problem

After spending lots of time on this site looking for advise I decided on the ebay option.

I got a 6210 installed it and setup call transfer on my main phone to the other phone if off or out of range.

When I get in the car I simply turn off my main phone and all calls are routed to the car.

Ah, problem I hear you shout..... What about the people who have noted the car phone number when I've called them from the car..

Well..... setup a call transfer rule on the car phone back to your main mobile.

Job sorted...

Hope this helps.;)

I would look again at what Whitenemesis and Jberks posted and go down the bluetooth route. Cheap and simple to install and will work for lots of different phone models. Perhaps ask your local Merc dealer who they recommend.
