My E230 has started to pink or knock when the engine in under load. I've just had a mobile tuning bloke out who suggests the exhaust sensor may be at fault. He checked the MAF which was spotlessly clean. He also suggested using V Power (Optimax) or other super unleaded type fuel.

Any other suggestions?

Pinking is caused when the engine is to far advanced, or if the the mixture is too weak, you should not have to use better fuels on that car. the TDC flywheel sensor is an issue with these cars.

Many thanks Malcolm (again!!!)

Could someone explain how this sensor not working properly could cause the mixture to be weak

and

an estimated price on a new one and could a fairly mechanically inept person such as myself fit it

and

any other possible reasons.

I know I ask a lot...
Many thanks in advance

Mark.

Since the ECU cant deviate much, and its this that controls the mixture. there is no adjustment on the E320 to set the mixture, I am just thinking that the flywheel sensor can alter the timing, making it too far advanced. I do not know if this can happen with them. Alan at the Auto clinic would know more than me, there have been issues with the ignition module

Give him a call.

Thanks again Malcolm.

I know of an MB specialist fairly locally so will get him to check the ECU for faults etc.

Will keep Alan in mind if the ECU is at fault.

Cheers

The ignition module could be more at fault than the ECU. naybe giving a weak spark.

Since posting this a while ago the car has been run on 97RON Shell V-Power or Total Excellium and the pinking has all but stopped.

Does this give anyone any ideas as to which anti-knock sensor may be at fault?

Cheers
Mark.

Back to my first answer,"engine to far advanced" if higher octane fuel reduces or stops the pinking the engine needs to be retarded a touch, the TDC senser sets up the engine timing, if this is adjustable I do not know.

e230 pinking

my e230 did the same, and gradually got worse.
took it to mb where they replaced the air flow meter.
and its cured, and runs better.
u can by a air flow meter from euro parts and german and swedish.
it wont be cheap, but easy to fit.
