Hello,

Could someone please help me?

I have a 1996 E 230 Avantgarde Estate, petrol. It has done approx. 88thousand miles and a couple of months ago the car started making a noise which I thought was the engine pinking. After taking advice from what had previously been reliable sources (with my previous cars), I had the automatic transmission thoroughly checked, the exhaust inspected with a fine tooth comb, two sessions of fuel injector cleaner and upgrading the fuel from 95 oct. to 98, and finally changing the plugs to NGK multi electrode - all to no avail. The noise occurs at about 30-35mph, 1500 revs on a very light throttle. I have not heard it at any other time including heavy acceleration. TIA.

Pinking accurs during pulling from low revs, there are no known faults for pinking ( a tinkling sound) the only mod as from 11/95 was a modified timing gear on the crankshaft for noises like howling / turbine at around 2000 RPM. there are external mods on the belt tensioner where a stud bolt and a collar nut becomes loose (LH thread)

Thank you, what belt do you mean as I thought that the engine had a timing chain not belt and there is no turbo, it merely injection.

The belt on front of engine that drives alternator etc, the tensioner keeps it tight, fairly common fault.

Thank you, I will try a new drive belt as I have a spare, the tensioner pulley and damper were replaced about 8000 miles ago.

Chris, I do not think it is the belt itself.

pinking

HI

just a thought, it could be the inlet cam adjustable timing sprocket, the test is to unplug the actuator on the front timing cover and see if it still makes the noise. I am asuming you have the 111 engine

Exhaust bracket

If it was a W124 I'd say it was the exhaust bracket by the gearbox that's loose or snapped. Worth checking. It happened on my car at 2200 rpm only
