Hi,

Hopefully someone could be kind to help me with a small question.

I have a 1998 W210 E280 (auto). Lately, the gear stick seems to have a bit of play in it. The gears select fine but the lever itself has play in it. By this I mean.... when R is selected, the lever moves freely about a centimetre each way (up and down). Also when I move the gear stick to D, I hear a noise as if something is loose inside the gear stick panel. Something like a bolt maybe.

Could anyone tell me what this may be and if I can fix this myself?

Help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Sat.

if I put a drawng up you would never read it. Normally with these shifts you have two sides. the side near the driver is the safty interlock. the other side normally operates a cable to the box. You have to take out the center console to access it. Once you can see it you will find what needs to be tightened up. Do not alter the lengths of any cables

I've just had the same thing happen to my W210 320CDI.

Television by any chance would you be kind enough to post a picture or diagram to help with this repair?

I've removed the centre console exposing a black housing from where the gear stick comes out. At this stage I can't see anything loose.

Also how do I remove the gear stick knob?

Thanks.

It probably isn't but if its anything like older 124/201 models with a mechanical levers and rod arrangement there are plasic bushes at the lower end (beneath the car) of the gear lever and in the selector lever on the box. They cost about 50p each but are a rather difficult part to access and press/clip in the replacement, you can see them but they are in such a tight place its almost a gearbox out job to fit new ones, at least the cross member needs to be lowered.

I left the job undone on my 201.

I had something similar happen to my W202 it turned out to be a bush and was changed fron the underside if I'm not mistaken.

There is a tiny bush in the selector road that breaks apart, 202's are quite common for it too. About £10 for the parts and no more than an hours work for any garage worth their salt!
