Play in manual gearlever

Is there any way I can tighten up the linkage for my gear lever? (C220 CDI W202). There is a lot of play (Fwds/Bkwds approx. 1") at the top of the lever when it is in gear. It would be nice to have a gearshift that is not so notchy.

Your gear shift is a combination of rods and cables, though there is nothing mentioned for taking up slack, the ball joint ends can all be replaced.

Cheers Malcom, I will look in to the price (and complexity!) of changing the ball joints.
