I have a 1995 E280 estate and have been having gear box problems.
When the car has been sat over night, or at the end of the day coming out from work I jump in the car start the engine and off I go. Car changes into 2nd and then I have to go up to 3500 rpm to get it to change into 3rd and it then jolts down into 4th. Once it has initially changed into to 3rd it settles down and changes normally again.
Is the gear box dying or is it something else????

Valve block

Chances are that you have a sticking or dirty valve block. You could change the oil, the sump and the torque converter must be drained.

Your car should have these faults recorded have the data read with a code reader.

What milage is the car.

I know that mine is programmed to hold the gears a little longer when cold to help it warm up quicker (and in particular warm the cat quicker). Does it sound as if yours is doing this?

Hi, the mileage is 118,000. How and where do I get the faults read with a data coder?.
Thanks for the advice.

Hi, yes it does sound like it may be doing the same as yours. I only got the car in August and don't remember it doing it when we first got it. Could that have something to do with it being summer then?

My old 300E would take up to 30 seconds or even longer to change out of 2nd into 3rd. Scared the poo out of me when I first got the car as I didn't know about warming up the cat from a cold start and I thought the gearbox was buggered.

so yes, it will take longer in winter, I used to deliberately take the car very slowly 'round the block to warm up before getting out on the main road.

Luckily the diesel doesn't have this feature.

Your handbook

In your handbook it says that upshifts are made at a higher engine speed when cold, don't forget that the box will be in lockup while in the lower gears(engine braking). Nice when something ends on a happy note. Good luck.

I had some similar and some varied other auto gearbox maladies like Lizoni's. I cured mine when I finally realized that the loss of gearbox fluid over time was the cooler hose connection. The crimping onto the elbow was not carried out right and lasted nealy 200K miles before it finally gave up the ghost. Since I fitted a new hose (ss braided teflon - flash git! cost a £tenner) everything has been perfeck and the gearbox shifts like new(?)

I suggest Lizoni checks the ATF level first and there are no fluid leaks.
