Would someone be kind to tell me what could be the symptoms of the gauge not showing any reading even though there is sufficient oil in the engine.

I am thinking of buying a used E200 and when I went to have a look and drove the car for some reason the oil pressure always remained zero on the gauge.

Any advice on what to look out for? or could be a faulty gauge?

Many thanks
Mike

Most likely just the sender unit. However this may have been purposly removed to hide bad pressure etc. The sender unit is the domed unit located on the left of the engine block near alternator, check for a bad connection.

Thanks for the reply,

Would someone tell me how the Merc pressure gauge operate (when it is wired properly and working) what are the normal readings of the gauge when starting from cold, idling and hot idle. I can imagine the needle should always show maximum when crusing and driving even gently at 200RPM.

I was hoping to ask what are the checks one should make when checking a used E200 Auto with about 60K miles?

for a car thats only done 60K, pressure should always be at 3. It will drop when very hot, maybe to about 2.5...

When the engine gets a bit more worn, you will find oil pressure at idle anywhere between 1-2.5.. As long as its at 3 when under revs, its ok.
