Started car 4 days ago and heard a double popping sound every 10 seconds or so from under car. Checked there, no leaks or other evident problems. Opened bonnet and smoke coming from engine. Today unlocked car, but did not start engine, and the popping sound is still there. Any ideas ? Is it safe to drive to garage for repairs ?

Could be alarm siren gone bad. Very hard to tell, but would fit with unlocking and not running engine. M112 v6 common for leaking oil from cam covers onto exhaust manifold. That could explain the smoke

Many thanks. We are still looking into this, but fortunately the smoking seems to have gone for the moment.
