That's verging on the philosophical, Stumpy. Can't answer that, but I do recall Porsche claiming a few years back that the exhaust that came out their tailpipes was "cleaner" than the air the engine sucked in.
If true, there must be tonnes of unseen CO2 just hanging over our heads waiting to be sucked in and reduced by the internal combustion engine.
