The EV fire data is skewed by age, come back when they are ten years old with 100,000 miles on the clock and assess the fire risk.
When the fifth owner has had a play or two…

How quickly do they stop?

Was just chatting with my son who is driving home from a Porsche experience at Silverstone. Apparently they say that their benchmark for braking time is about 50% of the acceleration (I think that is what he said). So 0-60 3.3 sec, 60-0 ~1.6 sec. (I
I think my car uses that benchmark nothing too stirring either way.

EV lifeline: 1st owner PCP for 3 years; 2nd owner for 3 years leaving two years of the 8 year warranty to sell on; 3rd owner taking a punt on the life of the battery as the car value has plummeted. Say what you like about ICE cars with a modicum of maintenance they will last 20+ years if cared for well without the lottery of a £20k bill hanging over you which will write the car off

I think 10 years out of a ev battery is doable, tbh dont see many w203s on the road and when you do they are normally a rusty mess, same with ml270s dont see many on the roads either and when you do its normally leaveing a trail of injector smoke, modern mercs/bmw are not designed for 20 years, they are designed for a little after the warranty and thats it hence the 3 year warranty, if i bought a 15 year old merc that needed adblue/pump/tank/nozzle/metering unit/inlet manifold/ etc i would probably sell that too.

I was talking to a friend last night who has had a BMW i4 for a few months now. The recommendation is that the battery should only be charged to 80%, to prolong longevity, but he, like most other company car drivers, ignores that and goes for range, That is going to do nothing for the life of the battery by the time it gets to owner no 3.

Very well thought out, intelligent video. For anyone who wants to save 4 minutes, the QA starts at 4:00.,

To summarise a few points

1. EV Batteries last pretty much for the life of the car, they are not like an iPhone battery. Tesla with 200,000 miles still has 90% battery capacity.

2. New generation of LFE batteries even better. Make sure you buy an EV with a heat pump, for winter use. Constant improvements in battery technology.

3. EV motors run at 80% efficiency, ICE engines 20%.

4. Very few moving parts compared to ICE.

5. Ignore internet clickbait scare stories - good news is boring.

I like EVs because they don't emit noxious fumes, and are quieter. This was not mentioned.

I shall be keeping my SL63 and Defender, but I am sure we will replace our diesel 3 series with an EV when the time comes.

Also forgot to add, if op does get an ev in or out of warranty a handy google search is HEVRA, my local ev specialist is in warrington and after speaking to him, they test older ev batterys with software and 9 times out of 10 they replace the faulty cell NOT THE COMPLETE BATTERY, so even out of warranty they can be repaired fairly cheap, there are around 1600 ev trained techs in the uk with 1000s more in training as we speak , i think we are heading in the right direction regards older ev worries.

While I agree that EVs are the future, I couldn’t imagine driving and electric ‘SL63’. Even driving my lowly SL400 the was something about the growl of the engine that was visceral.

Been with my son in his Taycan a few times and while it is very fast, it is lacking (that engine sound).

My father who was clearly ahead of the game never filled his petrol tank as he said it wore his car out quicker with all that weight sloshing about.

He used to warm dud batteries on a radiator at home in an effort to rejuvenate them, I would love to have seen him with an EV.

Should my car fall off a cliff and I survive I will let you know.
60-0 in 1.3 sec will stir something. ;) Have you experienced it?

Different if your 0-60 is 12 seconds.
