isn't 2200 around when the turbo gets going? Soot or smoke - e.g unburned fuel or burned oil?

If the mechanic can't get to the bottom of it in 2 days I suspect they don't know a lot about them. Let me guess - the computer says that it's fine!!
Been there a few times. Modern mechanics seem to know bugger all about cars other than where to plug in the laptop. I had an ignition problem like that. Got the tech to put the laptop aside and treat it as a normal car. Had the thing fixed in no time.

Ask them if they have a proper time served mechanic or take it away from the dealer and give it to a specialist. If you say where you are, someone should be able to recommend someone local who knows how a merc diesel works.

Yes, they are always eager to do this. Make sure you have an agreement that if it doesn't cure it you don't pay for the ECU.
May be worth having a quick chat with these guys

You'd be amazed the number of ECUs that get replaced, costing the owners thousands, for the want of a bit of solder!
