Hi, just registered on here as I'm having a problem with my E270 CDI that seems to be degrading quickly. It's 2003 and has 95k miles.

Last week on a 100mile motorway trip, I noticed that the turbo wasn't working correctly. It had been working earlier, but now acceleration is sluggish, it loses a few mph on the uphill, and max speed is just over 70mph. The Engine light came on, went out two days later, and hasn't been on since. Full power comes and goes, generally it's reset by restarting the car. I contacted MB dealer, but they've not looked at the car yet.

Now, a few days on, the turbo still seems to reset by restarting the car, but there is a very disturbing loud hissing noise coming from the underside under acceleration.

I stopped and took the car out of gear to have a closer look. There is air coming from the underside of the engine compartment when the car revs above c2000rpm.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. I have searched forums for the answers, but although the turbo problem seems common, the hissing has me worried.

Tony

You have blown a turbo pipe off, the clips wear with age and let go, a close look for signs of oil and you should fine where it blown off,

Thanks Sam. A relief, sounds so obvious in hindsight. I'll get it sorted asap.
Don't suppose you know of an independent mercedes tech in Northern Ireland?

Thanks again. You really show the contrast in service between a MB dealer and yourself. A simple, plain language, easy to fix answer. If only women were so simple.

Had this car booked in for next week to get this fixed, but the hissing and the power loss was getting worse and worse, so i brought it to a merc indie who had it diagnosed in 2 mins. Clogged catalytic converter. One hour later. No hissing noise, no power loss. Pocket is lighter by £40, car is missing a cat. Problem solved.
