In my Haynes book for the 190E it says only use Mercedes fluid. Is this vital or can another brand be used?

Hi Andy,

Can I just confirm this: you are saying that I should put automatic transmission oil into my power steering?

Thanks for the reply, I suppose you couldn't tell me where the oil filter is - 190E 1990 2.0 ....... surely I don't need to remove the air filter housing to get at it - else I can't find it.

The oil filter is mounted vertically at the back of the engine and you have to remove the air filter housing to get at it.  Your car should have a cartrige type filter,  earlier models had a replacement element.

This is not a big job, 15 - 20 mins max.

On this topic, can anyone tell me how often the power steering fluid and filter needs changing, since my Haynes seems to miss this out altogether (other than to tell me to only use Merc fluid, as in the item above)
